Hybrid/off-grid solar is mainly suitable for ensuring uninterrupted power. This system includes batteries along with solar panels. During the day, the load can be powered by sunlight, and excess electricity can be stored in batteries. Later, during the night or during load shedding, the stored battery power can be used to run essential loads. Therefore, for users whose work cannot stop due to power outages, hybrid/off-grid solar is a reliable solution.
Hybrid solar is generally used in places where grid connection is available but load shedding or power interruptions are a problem. It is suitable for homes, offices, shops, clinics, IT facilities, and similar places where routers, computers, CCTV systems, air conditioners, refrigerators, fans, lights, or other essential loads need to remain operational. On the other hand, off-grid solar is suitable for locations where the national grid is not available or grid electricity is unreliable. It can be used in remote areas, river islands, agricultural projects, resorts, telecom towers, and other locations without grid connection.
The cost of hybrid/off-grid solar is higher than that of on-grid solar because it comes with batteries and other control systems. Due to the batteries, maintenance also requires slightly more attention. However, its major advantage is uninterrupted power. Even during load shedding, essential loads can continue operating, which is highly effective for homes, offices, businesses, and important service-based facilities.
Nowadays, Bangladesh too allows hybrid systems for net metering, maximising the owner benefit.
